Forced Abortion Is Not the Solution in Nevada

Nevada Judge Egan
A few days I wrote about the case Elisa Bauer, a 32-year-old woman in Nevada, who is mentally challenged and is pregnant. She wants to keep the baby and give it up for adoption. Her own adoptive parents are her legal guardian, and they support Elisa's choice. But a Nevada judge last week ruled that she has to abort the baby. In his opinion, the disabled woman had no right to carry a child to term since she is mentally challenged and would not be capable of taking care of him or her. Never mind that she desperately wants to bring into this world.

The family of Elisa filed an appeal, and on Friday the Supreme Court of Nevada agreed with the family that the judge has no right to force an abortion over the decision of them as her guardians and the decision of Elisa herself. The Court gave the judge until Monday to respond. What is free choice all about anyway?

Stay tuned for round two.
